We have had positive meetings with the brewery that owns the pub (Palmers), have inspected the building inside and out to understand the work needed to re-open it and have started a series of actions aimed at determining whether there is a practical way forward. Any action plan would involve launching the King William as a Community hub, not just as a pub.

Currently the recycling boxes are collected every Wednesday and these include paper and cardboard in the black box, glass bottles and jars with lids in the green box and tins, foils, tetra pak cartons and plastic bottles with lids on, tubs and trays in the blue bag. - [Work starts at St Peter's, Catcott](https://catcottvillage.co.uk/work-starts-st-peters): Work has started to fix the church tower and roof at St Peter’s. The church will be closed until late summer while the leaking roof is replaced and repairs are carried out to the tower. The work is expected to cost more than £100,000. The church has been awarded a grant from the Listed Places of Worship Roof Repair Fund set up by the government to ensure churches remain open to the public. A further grant came from Viridor Credits which provides funding for community projects from money raised by landfill operators who pay a percentage of their landfill tax liability to the Landfill Communities Fund. Mr Tweedy, who studied physics and astronomy at university and completed post-doctoral research in Tucson, Arizona, was ordained in 2012 after working in IT and publishing. - [St Peter's Church](https://catcottvillage.co.uk/st-peters-church): The earliest records for St Peter’s Church date from 1292 but the Grade 1 listed building predominantly dates from the 15th century. Catcott is part of the Polden Wheel benefice which also covers the parishes of Ashcott, Burtle, Chilton Polden, Edington and Shapwick. - [Catcott Nature Reserves](https://catcottvillage.co.uk/catcott-nature-reserves): The Catcott nature reserve complex to the north of the village is a Site of Special Scientific Interest within a Special Protection Area. The reserve is managed by the Somerset Wildlife Trust. Water levels are carefully controlled to provide an internationally important environment for wintering birds and spring passage. In summer the fields are allowed to dry so that cattle can graze the fields creating the conditions vital for wintering and breeding birds. There are hides for observing the wildlife and a boardwalk is being constructed to aid access. More Shapwick Close by is the Shapwick Heath National Nature Reserve managed

- [Catcott Playing Field](https://catcottvillage.co.uk/about-catcott/catcott-playing-field): Catcott Playing Field has been enjoyed by the children of the village for 50 years. The park opened in 1966. Several items of play equipment have been added over the years, sadly the original roundabout has had to be removed as a result of modern safety regulations. The Village Association provided funds to help pay for the new roundabout. The play area is owned and run by a registered charity which raises funds through the year for the maintenance and upkeep of the field and equipment. - [Your Representatives](https://catcottvillage.co.uk/about-catcott/your-representatives): Your parish council Catcott Parish Council meets monthly on the second Tuesday at 7pm in the Hall at Catcott Primary School. The council is responsible for local issues in the village, assessing planning applications and working with other local authorities on getting roads and footpaths repaired and other issues. The council sets an annual precept which is paid as part of your council tax. For 2018/19 the precept in Catcott was  £8,500. The hall was opened in 1980 and recently extended and refurbished. The hall is used for a wide range of activities by the residents of Catcott, Edington and Chilton Polden. - [Catcott History](https://catcottvillage.co.uk/history-2): Catcott’s unbroken thread of history stretches back a long way. The Somerset Levels were settled in the Stone Age. Shards of Roman pottery have been discovered near Lippetts Way. In the Domesday Book of 1086, William the Conqueror’s tax inspectors assessed Catcott at five ‘hides’ held by Roger de Courseuilles, a Norman nobleman who possessed large tracts of Somerset, Dorset and Wiltshire. The oldest house in Catcott is reputed to be Dial House which dates from the 15th century. By Henry VII’s reign, 30 families were living in Catcott although not all were loyal subjects, with a number showing support

Every man who was physically able left the village to join the Forces. Of the 104 men eligible to serve, 90 joined up. That left 14 men of military age remaining in Catcott. Seven were physically unfit which meant there were just seven men left to carry out the all the work of the village. And those remaining seven were in low medical categories and had limited physical ability. The contribution made by the village to the war led to calls for a

- [Catcott Village Association](https://catcottvillage.co.uk/about-catcott/catcott-village-association): The CVA was formed more than 30 years ago to support the village. A committee of volunteers works through the year to organise events like Open Gardens which brings visitors from near and far to the village, “Catcott Come Dine With Me” which gives villagers a chance to get to know their neighbours and meet newcomers, and the annual community lunch. There is usually an annual event often held at the village hall with food and music. The funds raised by the CVA are spent in the village: we support St Peter’s Church, Catcott Primary School, and the Catcott Playing
- [Low flying](https://catcottvillage.co.uk/about-catcott/low-flying): Helicopters often fly over Catcott. Most are from the Fleet Air Arm base at Yeovilton. Generally they fly between three and six thousand feet but can be lower. From time to time fast jets and transport aeroplanes also fly low over the Levels.
